For the next four days, Sven and I did our best to balance time together and time apart. We would spend our days apart and plan to meet up for dinner, but inevitably, we’d also connect at lunchtime, and that would lead to co-working in the afternoon and dinner would become a sleepover.

Neither of us were complaining, but we both knew that every minute that passed brought us closer to a real goodbye, at the airport, for months. And neither of us was ready when that time came.

Sven took me to the airport and insisted on walking me in. I didn’t want to be a burden to him, but I also couldn’t bear to just kiss him goodbye at the curb, so we slowly walked toward the security check with our hands tightly clasped together.

“Call me as soon as you board.” He wrapped his arms around my neck, pressing his wet eyes against my shoulder.

“Don’t cry, baby.” I inhaled deeply, wanting to suck as much of him inside me as I could while keeping my own tears at bay. “I’ll be back before you know it.”

He nodded and sniffled, pulling himself together. “I know. And I’ll be fine. I’ll miss you like crazy, but when you get back… Well, be prepared to be milked dry.” He waggled his eyebrows in a comical way.

I laughed and sniffled, choking on my own unexpected emotion. “Be good, and I’ll bring back a special surprise for you.”

Now he laughed as he squeezed me even tighter. “As long as it’s like the surprise you gave me on the first night we met, I’ll be anxiously waiting for it.”

I kissed him hard, not pulling back until we were both desperate for a breath. But when I finally did, I turned and walked away. I kept my gaze straight ahead, afraid that if I glanced at him for even a second longer, I’d never be able to leave.

This was good for us.

We’d only been together for a few days, only known each other a few weeks. Distance could only make us appreciate each other more when we were back together again.

At least that was what I told myself as I buckled myself in and prepared for the longest two months of my life.
